| 1. | Students are not allowed to leave the school campus during school hours, without parental permission and approval from school administration. Students must sign out in the main office. |
| 2. | Students are to always be respectful, and submissive to the authority of teachers, staff and administration. |
| 3. | Student are to be quiet and respectful of other classes while in the hallways. |
| 4. | Skipping class or school is prohibited |
| 5. | Students are not to leave class without permission. Hall passes are required for all students in the halls or bathrooms while class is in session. Passes will be issued by faculty, administration, and school office staff only. |
| 6. | Students may consume bottled water before and after class, but not during class. |
| 7. | Candy, food, and drinks may be consumed only in the cafeteria during lunch. Food items may not be consumed while in class, in the hallways, or in any carpeted area. During the school day, vending machines are off limits except during lunch. |
| 8. | Comic books, Toys, cameras, cd or mp3 players, I-pods, electronic games, beepers, pagers, cell phones, laser pointers, and other such devices are not permitted on the school campus. They will be confiscated and returned only to the parent. Additional disciplinary action may be taken, depending on the severity of the infraction. If special written permission is granted by a teacher to use any of these items for a class assignment, they must be stored in that teacher's room |
| 9. | The school recognizes the benefits of our students having limited access to cell phone while at school. We must also ensure that the education of our student body is not degraded by the unnecessary/inappropriate use of cell phones. Therefore, in a concerted effort to strike a proper balance, we are implementing the following trial policy: Students are permitted to bring cell phones to school. However, they must be turned off and not used on school grounds from the time the student arrives at school until 3:10 p.m. (Emergency exceptions will need to be approved by the school office.) Cell phones are not to be visible on school property at any time before 3:10 p.m. They may be used after 3:10 p.m. to make necessary calls, e.g., to arrange for transportation, coordinate schedule changes with parents, etc. However, making unnecessary social calls is not authorized. At no time may a cell phone be used as a camera on school property or at school functions. Any violation of this policy will result in the confiscation of cell phone, which will only be returned to the student's parent by an administrator. Additional and progressively more serious administrative consequences may also be assigned to the student (e.g. detention, loss of privileges, ISS, etc.) depending on individual circumstances/infractions. Also, the student needs to accept primary responsibility for the protection and security of his/her cell phone. |
| 10. | No sunglasses, hats or other head coverings are to be worn inside the school building, except as stated in the Dress Code. |
| 11. | Students are not permitted in the teachers' lounge or any other restricted area without express permission. |
| 12. | Students are not allowed to have matches, cigarette lighters, firecrackers, stink bombs, mace, or explosives of any kind on school grounds. |
| 13. | Questionable or objectionable reading material, tapes, pictures, etc. are prohibited. |
| 14. | Students are not to push, run in the hall, or shove other students or adults. Horse playing is prohibited. |
| 15. | Students are not to use profane or obscene language, symbols, signs, or gestures. |
| 16. | Students will not write on or deface school property. Also, no graffiti is permitted on book bags or notebooks. |

Lying, forgery, and plagiarism are prohibited. |
| 18. | Cheating will not be tolerated. A first offense will result in a minimum of a recorded in-school suspension (ISS-R), unless there are extenuating circumstances. Any repeated offense would be classified as a Serious Offense and may result in an out-of-school suspension (OSS) pending possible recommendation for dismissal or withdrawal from school. Students will receive a grade of zero (0) for cheating on exams, tests, quizzes, or other projects, assignments, etc. Teachers will report all instances of cheating to the principal. |
| 19. | Students are not permitted to use another student’s worksheet, notes, or copy any portions of another student’s homework without the specific permission of the classroom teacher. This violation is considered cheating. |
| 20. | Public display of affection between students is not permitted on the school campus at any time or while on a school-sponsored field trip or event including athletic events. |
| 21. | Students should take pride in their school and should keep all rooms, halls and bathrooms clean and free from trash. Book bags, books, school supplies, and personal belongings must be kept off the floor at all times. |
| 22. | Students should be respectful of others and demonstrate a Christ-like attitude at all times. |
| 23. | Property searches/inspections by trained police officers/dogs may occur during the school year. |
| 24. | The school reserves the right, without prior permission from parents or students, to question students regarding possible disciplinary infractions, and to search and inspect any school personal property including any locker, vehicle, or room, and seize any suspicious or inappropriate items found therein. Also, a student search may be conducted, without prior permission from parents, if reasonable suspicion exists. This also includes the right to confiscate notes or other written material at the discretion of the faculty or staff. |
| 25. | If reasonable suspicion that a student is using drugs exists, the principal can require the parents to have the student tested (at parent’s expense) for drug usage. |
| 1 | Students are not dismissed by the sound of the bell; they are dismissed by the teacher. |
| 2. | Students are expected to do their best in all classes and to do all of their homework assignments. |
| 3. | Students are expected not to hinder their teachers from teaching or other students from learning. |

Classroom discipline will be handled by each individual teacher. Serious discipline problems or classroom disruptions will be referred to the principal or his designee. In such serious cases the teacher and principal or his designee will need to call the parents and, if necessary, meet with them.

Serious offenses are of such serious nature that the consequences may result in multiple days of out-of-school suspension pending immediate expulsion. (The school is not a sanctuary from prosecution in the courts for violations of civil and criminal laws occurring during school, on school property, or during a school-sponsored activity.)
| 1. | Detentions may be assigned by teachers or administrative staff as a disciplinary measure for any improper conduct and must be served after school from 3:15 until 4:00 p.m. or on Saturdays, at the assigned time and at the school’s discretion. Detentions must be served on the date assigned unless an emergency situation (which must be approved by the principal or his designated representative) prevents the student from serving on that date. Exceptions will not be made for extra-curricular activities including sports. |

A student is not permitted to miss/skip a detention to avoid
missing a sports or other extra-curricular activity. An athlete who does not
return the signed detention form does not play/practice on the assigned
detention day. If the student is absent from school on a detention day, he/she automatically serves that detention on the next detention day. |

| 2. | Teachers assigning a detention will fill out a Discipline Report and designate the next available date. |
| a. Detention notices will be sent home for parent's signature | |
| b. The student does not return the signed detention form to the teacher who issued it it within 2 school days or the day of detention, whichever comes first. | |
| c. If a student does not return the notice by the required date and time (class period), the teacher will issue a second detention. | |
| 3. | A student will either serve a detention by completing assigned work in the detention room or by performing work on the school premises. |
| 4. | Students will report to the detention room no later than 3:15 p.m. for after-school detention or at the time assigned on the Discipline Report for Saturday detentions. |
| 5. | Anyone reporting late for a detention without a valid excuse will be required to serve both the original and an additional detention. |
| 6. | If assigned to a detention room, students are not permitted to talk or move about during the detention period. Students will work on assigned projects and turn them in to the monitor when they are completed. If the work is not satisfactorily completed, an additional detention will be assigned. |
| 7. | Students assigned five detentions during a 9-week marking period will serve an in-school suspension (ISS-N). Consequences for accumulating additional detentions in that marking period will be determined by Administration based on specific circumstances. |
| 8. | To defray the costs of hiring a detention monitor, the school reserves the right to charge the parents of students who serve after-school or Saturday detentions |
Students may be suspended at the discretion of the principal for repeated misbehavior or serious misconduct. The principal may also modify the following policies depending on special circumstances.
There are three categories of suspensions: In-school suspension- not recorded (ISS-N), in-school suspension - recorded (ISS-R), and out-of-school suspension (OSS). For all three categories students will be responsible for completing all work assigned and quizzes/tests scheduled before or during the suspension, and they will receive credit for the work completed. Appropriate penalties will be assessed if work is turned in late or quizzes/tests are not completed on the time schedule assigned by the teacher. Work assigned before a suspension, but due while the student is suspended will receive full credit, provided that the assignment is sent to the school the day it is due.
The superintendent has the authority to suspend students for up to 10 days per suspension. The principal has the authority to suspend students for up to 3 days per suspension. He may delegate this authority to the assistant principal for ISS-N suspensions of two days or less. Suspensions of greater than 10 days must be approved by the HCS School Board.
1. An in-school suspension (ISS) will require the student to be at the school, but isolated from other students for the period of the suspension. The student will be marked as absent from classes. All assigned work must be turned in. If a faculty/staff member must be paid an additional fee to monitor the student's in-school suspension (for example, in the case of a Saturday ISS), the family of the student(s) is responsible for paying that fee for the period of the suspension.
a. ISS-N:
(1) Not recorded on permanent record; student receives credit for work missed upon completion of the work. A student receiving more than one ISS-N during a school year may lose leadership position for the school year and would not be eligible to run for any student leadership positions for the following school year without special approval by the principal.
(2) Other ISS-N penalties:
(a) During each school year, for every infraction requiring ISS-N after the first one, one percentage point will be deducted from the final 9-week grade for each class in which the student is enrolled (e.g., a 9-week average of 90% would be reduced to 89%).
(b) Chronic ISS-N category infractions could be elevated to ISS-R suspensions, depending on circumstances.b. ISS-R:
(1) Recorded on permanent record. These are not recorded on the student's official transcript, therefore it is not forward to colleges/universities upon graduation.
(2) Loss of leadership position (including Beta Club, SCA, Class Officer) for the school year. Would not be able to run for any student leadership position for the following school year without special approval by the principal.
(3) Cancels opportunity to play sports for part/all of the season depending on the circumstances of the infraction. Privilege to play in following athletic season requires the principal's approval.
(4) Other penalties for each ISS-R include:(a) An unexcused absence.
(b) For each infraction required ISS-R, the following number or percentage points will be deducted from the final semester grade for each class in which the student is enrolled. 1-2 days ISS-R = 1% (e.g. a semester grade of 90% would be reduced to 89%)(5) Repeated ISS-R category infractions could be elevated to OSS suspensions, depending on circumstances.
(6) Depending on circumstances other privileges may be removed.
2. Out-of-school suspension (OSS):
a. Will be under the supervision of an adult at home or at a location agreed upon by administrator and parents during the period of the suspension.
b. Recorded on permanent record.
c. Loss of leadership position (including Beta Club, SCA, Class Officer) for the school year. Would not be able to run for any student leadership position for the following school year without special approval by the principal. (See p.33)
d. Cancels opportunity to play sports for part/all of the season depending on the circumstances of the infraction. Privilege to play in following athletic season requires the principal's approval.
e. Students suspended, pending expulsion or pending withdrawal for disciplinary reasons, will not attend school or any extra-curricular school function until the process is complete.
f. Other penalties for each OSS include:(1) An unexcused absence.
(2) For watch infraction requiring OSS, the following number percentage points will be deducted from the final semester grade for each class in which the student is enrolled:(a) 1 - 2 days OSS: 2% (e.g., a 9-week average of 90% would be reduced to 88%).
(b) 3-4 days OSS: 3%
(c) 5-7 days OSS: 4%
(d) 8-10 days OSS 5%
(3) A possible recommendation for dismissal or expulsion by the School Board.
(4) Depending on the circumstances other privileges may be removed, to include but not limited to the following: Senior Christian Retreat, Junior/Senior Banquet, participation in commencement and baccalaureate exercises, etc.
3. Grade reductions will be prorated if a student leaves prior to the end of a semester.
| 1. | All new students are on an automatic one-semester probation. |
| 2. | Administrative Probation may be used at the principal's discretion under special circumstances and for problems other than those listed below. This probation does not limit a student's activities or leadership roles. A written explanation of reasons for an administrative probation will be retained on record for one semester, and then if satisfactory progress has been made, be removed from the student's permanent file. |
| 3. | Probation may be invoked when a student has a serious problem and has been given sufficient opportunity to correct or change his behavior or academic status. If the situation does not improve to a satisfactory level, the student will be dismissed or asked to withdraw from the school. For such situations, the following probation categories may be invoked: |
| Academic: New Students - A new student who fails one or more subjects during the first semester of attendance will be placed on academic probation for the following semester. Re-enrolled students - Any student failing two or more subjects in a semester will be placed on academic probation for the following semester. Student activities will be limited for individuals on probation (except for new students on probation). The student will be removed from any leadership position during that school year. The student will lose the opportunity to play sports during the season he/she is put on probation. Privilege to play in the following seasons that year needs the Administration's approval. near the end of a probation period, the administration will be reconsider the situation an remove the student from probation or recommend withdrawal from school. | |
| Attitude: A rebellious spirit that is unchanged after encouragement from faculty, staff and students; a continued negative attitude; or a negative influence upon other students. | |

Disciplinary: Continual, deliberate disobedience or disrespect to a faculty or staff member; continual disregard for school rules; committing a serious breach of conduct inside or outside of school which has an adverse effect upon the school's testimony. |

| 4. | Probation for Academics (The following does not apply to students on administrative probation.) Student activities will be limited for individuals on probation (except for new students on probation). The student will be removed from any leadership position during that school year. The student will lose the opportunity to play sports during the season he/she is put on probation. Privilege to play in following seasons that year needs the Administration’s approval. Near the end of a probation period, the administration will reconsider the situation and remove the student from probation or recommend withdrawal from school. |
| 5. | Two or more consecutive semesters of probation may result in the student's dismissal from the school |
The School Board of Hampton Christian High School reserves the right to expel any student if, in the sole judgment of the school, the child is a continuous discipline problem, is not in harmony with the other students and/or teachers, or is not benefiting spiritually and/or intellectually as a student in the school. Students may be expelled for serious offenses described in this handbook.
A student who has been expelled may reapply for possible admission to Hampton Christian High School the school year following the completion of his/her expulsion. The student must have repented and apologized to all offended parties as well as displayed a good record at another school. Re-admission will be granted only upon recommendation of the administration and approval of the School Board.
Expelled students and students who have withdrawn at the request of the administration are prohibited from being on school campus before, during, and after school hours, and are prohibited from attending school-sponsored functions without the express permission of the principal or his designee for each event.
Students suspended, pending expulsion or pending withdrawal for disciplinary reasons, will not attend school or any extra-curricular school function until the process is complete.
