Philosophy

Our commitment at Hampton Christian High School is to do all things in a way that is pleasing to the Lord and that will bring honor and glory to Him. Accordingly, what we wear should direct subtle attention to the inner person, not to the physical body. The essence of our dress code is expressed in I Peter 3:3-4, which states that our attractiveness should not be based on what we wear, but on our hidden inner self, "the unfailing beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit."

God has given parents the responsibility for the nurture and admonition of their children. Therefore, we expect parents to teach and enforce God-pleasing dress and appearance.

The Hampton Christian High School dress code has been established to provide minimum standards of dress and appearance that will assist parents and students in choosing appropriate clothing to be worn to classes and school functions. We realize that clothing styles are cultural and cultural standards are not always right or wrong. However, student attire needs to be safe, conservative, modest, neat and appropriate; also, it should not be a distraction, express an ungodly lifestyle, nor tempt others to stumble.

Policy

Students need to adhere to the following dress code standards which will be strictly enforced. Unless  otherwise designated, these standards apply AT ALL TIMES (before, during, and after school) when the student is (1) on school campus, and (2) at any school-sponsored function that is off school campus, including "away" athletic events both on and off campus. Since the following standards/guidelines are not intended to cover every possibility, the administration will make the final decision regarding dress code compliance or any questionable clothing or style that is not specifically addressed in the current dress code. We wish to assure both students and parents that while standards of dress and conduct will be strictly enforced, students will be dealt with in Christian love and fairness, with concern for the individual involved.

Any student in violation of the dress code may be sent home and/or held out of class or an activity until the infraction is corrected. This may result in an unexcused absence. Since parents are responsible for the dress and appearance of their children, they will be notified of any dress code violations, and held responsible to bring in an appropriate change of clothing as needed.

Depending on circumstances, obvious and repeated dress code violations will result in disciplinary action.  For the third and every subsequent dress code violation in a semester, the student must serve one detention.  Students assigned 5 detentions during any 9-week marking period will sever an in-school suspension (ISS-N).

Dress Code Standards/Guidelines

Please note that he dress code has been prayerfully designed to reflect modesty, attractiveness, appropriateness, inoffensiveness, and avoidance of world/sensual connotation, while allowing for much individual expression.  Student need to have any questionable clothing/styles specifically approved by the administration prior to buying/wearing such clothing styles.

Specific Dress Code Standards for Young Ladies

  1. The basic acceptable attire for GIRLS is a collared, sleeved, shirt/blouse/turtleneck, appropriate fitting slacks, jeans, skirts, or dresses, a belt if a loops are present, and shoes. Jeans or slacks are to be full-length.

  2. Girls are permitted but are not required to tuck in their shirt/blouse/top. However, to maintain the appropriate level of modesty, tops must be sufficiently long enough to ensure that no part of the midriff is ever exposed; whether sitting, raising the arms, or bending over. Therefore, the length of the untucked shirt/blouse/top must extend to a minimum of 4 inches below the top of the belt line when standing, but no more than 8 inches below the top of the belt line when standing. If the decision is made to tuck in the shirt/blouse/top its length must still be sufficient to ensure it remains tucked in at all times to avoid exposing any area of the midriff. It is also highly suggested that consideration be given to wearing a long tucked-in article of clothing under the shirt/blouse/top, which will further preclude the exposure of the midriff, whether the shirt/blouse/top is untucked or tucked.

  3. Girls are permitted to layer two modest-fitting untucked blouses/shirts/tops as long as one of the layers (typically the inner layer) extends at least 4 inches below the top of the belt line when standing and the other layer (typically the outer layer) extends at least 2 inches below the top of the belt line when standing. Further, neither untucked layer can be more than 8 inches below the top of the belt line when standing.

  4. Shirts/blouses/tops - No scoop neck, low-cut V-neck, midriff or cropped-top styles are to be worn. All acceptable tops must be long enough to ensure the midriff is never exposed (e.g. when bending or when raising one's arms.)

  5. Dresses with or without collars may be worn as long as the neckline is modestly cut and meets the same standard as # 1 immediately above.

  6. Dresses and Skirts
        -
may not be shorter than 2 inches above the mid-point of the knee when standing
       -    slits must meet the same standard
       -    for modesty, especially when seated, dresses or skirts must NOT be tight or form-fitted

  7. Slacks and Jeans

       -    NO spandex, stretch, leather, vinyl, or animal print materials

  8. Earrings must be reasonable in size and standard form. A girl may have no more than two earrings per ear, and they must be in the earlobe area.

  9. No other body piercing (e.g. nose rings, tongue bars, naval rings, etc.) is permitted.

  10. Shoes
        -
Athletic and dress shoes are permitted.
       -   For shoes with strings, the shoestrings must be tied or secured.
       -   Backless dress shoes are permitted. Other backless footwear is prohibited. (e.g. flips-flops, beachwear, athletic sandals, etc.)

Guidelines for Formal Dress Code

Timothy 4:12 - "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."

Our goal in setting forth these guidelines is to provide our students with Christian guidance as we all strive to be good stewards in regard to our personal Christian testimony and that of Hampton Christian High School.  Any specific questions should be addressed to the office.

It is the responsibility of the students to insure that their guests who do not attend Hampton Christian comply with these guidelines.

Ladies  Proverbs 31;10- "who can find a virtuous woman?  For her price is far above rubies."

In the spirit of I Timothy 2:9, we exhort all of you to uphold the standards of Christian modesty in your selection of a dress.  Specific minimum standards are as follows:

1.      Hemline must not be more than 2 inches above the mid-knee when standing

2.      Slits in full-length formals must not be more than 4 inches above the mid-knee when standing.

3.      Necklines need to conform to modest Christian standards (no cleavage revealed).

4.      Back lines need to conform to modest Christian standards (at least 1/2 of the back must be fully covered).

5.      Formal dresses must have shoulder straps.

6.  The general fit/fabric of the dress needs to conform to modest Christian standards.

7.  Dress shoes are to be worn.

Violation of the above standards will result in school discipline and the girl will be required to wear a provided wrap.

Gentlemen

Young men need to choose their attire to fit the occasion and honor their companion.  Therefore, young men should as a general rule wear their "Sunday best".  Specific minimum standards are as follows:

1.      Young men need to wear a dress shirt, dress pants, a belt, a tie, and dress shoes.

2.   A jacket is preferred, but not required.

Guidelines for Spirit Week Dress Code

The normal dress code will apply to students who are not in Spirit Week costumes that reflect the theme of the day.. For those in costumes, the following will apply:

  1. Since the dress code is not as clearly defined as it normally would be, teacher/staff have the authority and discretion to make decisions on individual situations/circumstances that may arise. They may also defer those decisions by sending students to the office for resolution regarding their dress.
  2. Shirts of all sport uniforms need to be tucked in.
  3. Sweat pants need to be worn with cheerleader skirts and other skirts that do not meet school dress code standards of length.
  4. As part of the costumes of the day, caps/hats may be worn in the halls.  However, teachers will make the decision regarding whether hats/caps may be worn in their classroom.
  5. Any shorts must meet dress code standards as stated in the student handbook, i.e. shorts  must be modest fit and not shorter than seven inches above the bottom of a bent knee (i.e. no more that 7" from the mid-point of the knee when standing).
  6. On chapel day, students not dressing in a costume will need to comply with Chapel Day dress code.
  7. Boys may not wear girls' attire and vice versa.
  8. On Blue/Gold/White Day, washable blue, gold and white hair colors are permissible.  During the school day, partial face paint, e.g., "HCHS", etc. may be painted on cheeks, forehead, and chin.  Full face paint is permissible at the homecoming games.
  9. For student safety, roller blades, skates, scooters, or skateboards will not be permitted in school or on school grounds.
