Letter to Parent

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Hampton Christian-Mary Atkins Pre-School.

God places the responsibility of a child's education to the parents.  Therefore, it is our goal to partner with Christian parents and their church in order that we may train up your child in the love and admonition of the Lord.

We count it a privilege to support you as you begin your child's education.  We look forward to an exciting year in Pre-School.  May God bless  you and your family abundantly.

                                    In His service,

                                    Dawn Beard,

                                    Pre-School Director

Hours of Operation

6:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. - Day Care

8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Pre-School (Classroom instruction)

12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Day Care

Arrival

A parent will need to escort the child into the Pre-School building.  Please wait until your child is checked in before leaving.

If you are using Day Care services for your child, a separate Day Care form must be on file.

Classes begin promptly at 8:30 a.m., bringing  your child in late is disruptive.  Please check your child in and leave.  Do not take your child to his/her class.  The check-in person will do this.

Dismissal

Pre-school ends at 12:00 p.m.  To ensure the safety of your child, only authorized persons on the pick up list will be permitted to pick up your child.  A written note from a parent will be required before your child can be released to anyone not on the list.  Any pick up persons not known by our staff should be prepared to show a picture identification.  Signing out your child at pick up is mandatory.  To eliminate confusion and congestion, please wait in the office.  Your child will be brought to you.

Attendance

To receive maximum benefit from school, students must be in regular attendance.

Any tardiness or absences will be charged against the student's attendance record.

Instruction time is from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.  Therefore, should the student miss more than one hour during this period it will result in being recorded as an absence.

Newsletter

Your student will bring home a weekly newsletter from his/her teacher containing information on what activities and curriculum are planned for the week.  Review memory verse, letters and numbers with your child.  Remember, your child is excited about learning.  Please do not "over-drill" your child.

Emergency Closings

Early dismissal or late start of school may be necessary due to bad weather.  Emergency information will be broadcast on WKEZ - FM 94.1, WFOG - FM 92.9, WTAR - AM 790, and WNIS - AM 850.  This information will also be placed on WAVY, WTKR, WVEC TV.

Note:  In case of hurricane, should the city of Hampton be placed on a warning status, HCS and Day Care will be closed.

Food

Food is not supplied by the Pre-School.  Morning snack is enjoyed at 9:30 a.m.  We ask that you send "healthy" morning snacks such as yogurt (can be stored in refrigerator), apple wedges, orange sections, grapes, raisins, celery, carrot sticks, canned fruit, apple sauce, etc.  Please prepare fruits and vegetables to be eaten (peel and slice at home).  The teacher cannot leave the class unattended to do this.

Children that will be staying after 12:00 p.m. will also need to bring or buy lunch and afternoon snack.  To purchase snacks or lunch items parents should fill out a purchasing order form, place form along with money in a zip lock baggie, and place in student's folder.  Your child's teacher will send orders to the office.  Change will be returned in the baggie.

Birthday Parties

Birthday parties will be during our normal 9:30 a.m. snack time so that students leaving at 12:00 p.m. may participate.  Parents may bring or send in cupcakes, cookies, brownies, or doughnuts and/or juice (no soda).  If you wish to supply "Goodie Bags", they will be sent home in the children's bookbags.

Lunch

We want lunch for your preschooler to be a happy time in a pleasant atmosphere.  Since we are all working together for what is best for the children here are some ideas that can help our lunch time go smoothly.

Here's our plan:

1. If your child will only eat 1/2 of a sandwich, then send only 1/2.

2. If your child does not like the crust on bread, please cut it off at home.

3. Prepare fruits/vegetables at home.  (Peel or cut)

4. Smaller portions of several items seem to work best for preschoolers.

5. Use variety, children tire of eating the same food everyday.

With your help, lunch time with your "little one" can be a happy time for us all.

Holiday Celebrations/Parties

October - Harvest

November - Thanksgiving

December - Christmas

February - Valentine's Day

March/April - Easter

June - End of Year

A Christian (non-secular) emphasis will be the focus of all holidays.  Therefore, Hampton Christian Schools does not celebrate Halloween or use pictures or decorations representing Jack O'Lanterns, witches, Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Lepricauhn, etc.

Clothing

Children play hard and will get dirty.  Please do not dress your child in "Sunday Best".

Dress Code:

1. No one piece body suits (including one piece with snaps between legs).

2. No flip-flop style shoes.

3. Socks should be worn with all shoes including sandals.

4. Clothing should be free of inappropriate pictures or slogans.  (No violent or evil characters.  Example:  Wrestlers, Pokémon, Teenage Mutant Turtles, Darth Vader, etc.)

Note: If your child has not mastered using a belt, snaps, buttons, zippers, we would suggest elastic waist bands.

Every child will need a complete change of labeled clothing including socks and underwear to stay at school.  Should soiled clothes be sent home, be sure to send a clean set the next school day.

Discipline

The teacher is the first line of discipline in any classroom setting.  A teacher may refer the student to the principal for extreme or habitual negative behavior.

Teachers and administrators will use a variety of disciplinary methods to maintain a positive, safe school environment.  Teacher will attempt to catch students being good.  Positive recognition will be issued.  (Example:  stamp, sticker, trip to "goodie box")

When misconduct occurs, corrective measure will be employed to help the student change his/her attitude or behavior.  Corrective measures which will typically be employed are as follows:

1. Oral warning

2. Sad face

3. Time out

4. Sad note to parents

5. Call to parents

For serious offenses (biting, hitting other students/teachers, etc.) a parent will be required to pick up the student for the remainder of the day.

Students who are a continuous discipline problem may be asked to withdraw.

Nap

If your child will be staying for afternoon day care, please send in a small labeled blanket.  These will be sent home periodically for washing.  It is important that blankets be replace the next school day.

Show-N-Tell

Show-N-Tell is on Friday each week.  Toys should not be brought to school except on Show-N-Tell day.

Health

Ultimately, the health of every student is the responsibility of the student's parents.  Staff members are present at the school to deal with minor emergencies.  In case of severe problems, the students will be taken to the nearest hospital emergency room.  When a child is sick or hurt, the parents are informed immediately.

As part of our responsibility in maintaining a safe environment for all children and staff, the following guidelines have been established:

1. Children with a temperature of 100( or more, vomiting or having diarrhea must be picked up immediately.  The student should be free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for a minimum of 24 hours before returning to school.  Beware that diarrhea is a frequent side effect of some antibiotics.  This should be reported to your pediatrician.

2. Parents may also be called to pick up their child if they are found to have "pink eye".  Your child must see a doctor and be on medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

3. Head lice is a common problem in this area.  Should your child contract head lice he/she will be readmitted to school only after they have been treated with the proper lice-killing shampoo and nits have been removed form hair.

4. Any rash which appears under clothing (armpits, abdomen, back) should be medically evaluated.

5. We go outdoors every day except on rainy or extremely cold days.  Therefore, please dress your child accordingly.  Be sure to label hat, coats, sweaters, etc.  Children not well enough to go outdoors should be kept at home.

6. Some medications may be dispensed during school hours, but ONLY if certain guidelines are correctly followed.  This means that a "Parents Request for Administration of Prescribed Medication" form (available through the school office) MUST be on file.  The form must be signed, dated, and correctly completed by parent and physician to be valid.  All medications must be brought to the school office by parent/guardian in its original container.  Students may not bring their medication to school.  This is to protect them as well as their classmates.  All medication brought to school by the parent/guardian will be kept in the school office and be dispensed by an adult.

7. Tylenol is the only non-prescription medication which may be administered by school personnel and only if the parent has marked "yes" on the student application.

No School Days (marked on school calendar)

If your child normally stays for after 12:00 p.m. care, you will be given the opportunity to sign up for "Special Day" day care.  Approximately 2 weeks prior to a school day being closed, a "Special Day" form will be sent home in your child's folder.  Please fill it out and return it to the Pre-School office.  Space is limited on these days and is filled on a first-come first-served basis.  There is an extra $15 fee per day for this service which is not included in your day care cost.

Important Do's

1. Keep your child's records up to date:  home, work, all emergency numbers and contacts, also any address changes.

2. Be sure to label all of your child's belongings:  clothing, bookbags, lunch boxes, blankets.

3. Check bookbags and folders daily.  Return any "Special Day" forms ASAP.

4. Keep season appropriate clothing at school.  Replace soiled clothing on next school day.

5. Our first priority is the care of the children.  Please do not engage in lengthy conversations with the teachers.  Please call with any questions or concerns.  The teacher will be glad to return your call or schedule a meeting with you at a more convenient time.

6. Always sign-out your child when picked up.

Closing Word

Parents may not agree with every decision or policy.  However, we seek the prayers, cooperation, and loyalty of each family in upholding the specific standards contained within this handbook.
