Elementary School Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from prospective elementary school families.

HCA Elementary School offers a comprehensive curriculum including Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Library. Students also participate in character education, weekly chapel, and enrichment activities throughout the year.
The average elementary class size at HCA is 16 students, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1. This allows teachers to know each child well, provide individualized instruction, and create a close-knit classroom community where every student feels seen and supported.
HCA uses a balanced literacy approach combining structured phonics instruction, guided reading, independent reading, and rich literature study. Our systematic phonics program builds strong decoding skills in the early grades while exposure to quality literature develops comprehension, vocabulary, and a genuine love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
Elementary students can participate in various activities including art club, elementary choir, running club, STEM club, spelling bee, book club, and chess club. Students also enjoy seasonal performances (winter concert, spring musical), field days, science fair, and age-appropriate field trips. Middle school athletics become available starting in 6th grade.
Character development is integrated throughout the school day through weekly chapel services, classroom lessons on core values (integrity, respect, responsibility, kindness, perseverance), service projects, and consistent modeling by faculty. Students learn these values not just through instruction but through daily practice and real-life application in their interactions with peers and teachers.
HCA maintains strong parent-school communication through multiple channels: regular newsletters, parent-teacher conferences (held twice yearly plus additional conferences as needed), progress reports, an online parent portal with grades and assignments, and direct teacher communication via email. Teachers are accessible and responsive to parent questions and concerns.
Elementary school runs from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. The day includes morning meeting, a 2.5-hour literacy block, mathematics instruction, science and social studies, lunch and recess, and specials (art, music, PE, library). Kindergarten has a slightly modified schedule with earlier dismissal on certain days to accommodate younger students' needs.
HCA gradually builds independence and academic skills throughout elementary school to ensure smooth transitions. Upper elementary students develop stronger study habits, organizational skills, and critical thinking abilities. 5th graders participate in transition activities with middle school faculty, visit the middle school campus, and receive guidance on what to expect. Our goal is for every student to feel confident and prepared for the next step in their educational journey.
